In the early 1970s, Arkansas was the setting for bizarre reports of a large, hairy creature known as the Fouke Monster. Allegedly, it was sighted in the town of Fouke and surrounding areas. Eyewitnesses described it as a bipedal creature, covered in long dark hair and standing up to ten feet tall.
The creature was said to have a terrible smell, reminiscent of a mix between a skunk and a wet dog. Some witnesses claimed to have seen its bright red eyes, which were about the size of silver dollars. Reports indicated that it ran swiftly, with a gait similar to that of a monkey.
One of the most notable incidents occurred in May 1971 when it reportedly attacked the home of Bobby and Elizabeth Ford. Elizabeth believed the creature was a bear when it reached through her window while she slept. Bobby and his brother chased it away, firing several shots at it, but no blood was found. The couple discovered three-toed footprints and damage to their home.
As word spread, interest in the creature grew. Reports of more sightings followed, including a group of witnesses claiming to have seen the monster cross a highway. A local radio station even placed a bounty on the creature, while the local sheriff implemented a temporary no-gun policy for public safety.
Despite the frenzy, experts began to question the validity of the sightings. An archaeologist concluded that there was a 99 percent chance the tracks were a hoax. He noted that the three-toed footprints could not belong to any known primate, which typically have five toes.
Public interest peaked with the release of the docudrama horror film The Legend of Boggy Creek in 1972, which was inspired by these sightings. Although attention waned in the subsequent years, sporadic reports of the Fouke Monster continued into the late 1990s.
Even now, this large, hairy creature remains a part of Arkansas folklore.
