In the rural regions of northwest Iberia, a haunting belief persists. The Santa Compaña, or "Holy Company," is said to be a procession of the dead. This eerie spectacle unfolds at midnight, led by a living person who carries a cross or a cauldron of holy water.
The living leader is compelled by a curse to walk the village paths each night. They are unaware of this duty the next day, waking up weary as though they had not slept. Behind them, souls of the departed follow, holding lit candles, though they often remain unseen.
To avoid the curse, witnesses must quickly draw a protective symbol on the ground or hide until the procession passes. If the leader does not transfer the curse to another within weeks, they may grow weak and eventually die.
This ghostly procession is believed to announce impending death, targeting homes where someone is due to pass. Those who can see the Santa Compaña reportedly have a unique sensitivity, often linked to a mistake made during their baptism.
