In the 1872 United States presidential election, Louisiana participated by voting for Ulysses S. Grant as president. Grant defeated Liberal Republican candidate Horace Greeley by more than 11 percent. Despite winning the popular vote, Louisiana's electoral votes were ultimately rejected by Congress.

This rejection stemmed from the tumultuous circumstances of Reconstruction. Reports of irregularities and allegations of electoral fraud were rampant during this period. As a result, the eight electoral votes Louisiana had cast were not counted.

Louisiana's situation was not unique; neighboring Arkansas also had its electoral votes rejected under similar circumstances. The events of this election reflect the chaotic political landscape of the time, where the legitimacy of votes was often questioned.

The rejection of Louisiana's electoral votes serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced during Reconstruction in America.
