The Knights Hospitaller began with a simple mission: to provide care for sick and injured pilgrims in Jerusalem. Founded in the 12th century, they rapidly transformed from caretakers into a military force. Recognized as a distinct order by the pope, they were charged with defending the Holy Land.
Initially established to tend to the sick, the organization quickly evolved after the First Crusade. They gained prominence, rising to power and militarization as they began hiring knights. By the 1120s, the Knights Hospitaller had become a formidable military presence.
As the Crusades continued, they fought fiercely until their stronghold in Acre fell in 1291. Following this loss, they relocated first to Rhodes and then Malta, where they governed a vassal state, showing their adaptability in the face of shifting political landscapes.
The knights also briefly ventured into the Americas, acquiring Caribbean islands in the mid-17th century before relinquishing them. Their history includes controlling parts of North Africa for two decades, emphasizing their expansive reach.
However, the Protestant Reformation fractured their unity. Commanderies in northern Europe broke away, leading to a long-lasting schism that still exists among various factions of the order today. The French occupation of Malta in 1798 marked another decline, scattering the remnants of the order across Europe.
Despite their storied past, today, several organizations uphold the traditions of the Knights Hospitaller, maintaining a legacy that spans centuries.
