The Caspian Sea Monster was not your average aircraft. This enormous creation from the Soviet Union took to the skies just above the water, defying conventional designs.
Developed in the 1960s, it was officially known as the KM, short for Korabl Maket, a term meaning "model-ship." This unusual vehicle operated using ground effect, a phenomenon that allowed it to skim over the surface of the water at low altitudes.
Measuring an impressive 92 meters in length and weighing 544 tonnes, the KM was the largest and heaviest aircraft in the world from 1966 to 1988. It started its operational journey in 1966, surprising the world with its capabilities before it met an untimely fate in the Caspian Sea.
Designed by the Central Hydrofoil Design Bureau, the KM was engineered to fly at 5 to 10 meters above the water, employing ten turbojet engines. Despite its aircraft classification, authorities considered it closer to a boat due to its unique structure and operation.
Its first flight was a noteworthy event, executed by the designer himself alongside a pilot in 1966. This was highly unusual, as most designers didn’t fly their creations. The KM was shrouded in secrecy, transported across the Volga River at night, camouflaged and hidden from prying eyes.
By the time it ended its testing phase in 1980, the KM had set numerous speed records. It reached a maximum speed of 650 km\/h, albeit with some sources claiming even higher. However, despite its promising start, the KM faced design-related challenges, leading to a halt in production.
Ultimately, the KM crashed into the Caspian Sea due to pilot error, sinking a week later. No efforts were made to recover it, leaving it to rest on the seabed. Over the years, the KM’s legacy inspired future ekranoplan developments, though no other prototype was ever made.
The Caspian Sea Monster remains a curious chapter in aviation history, representing a blend of engineering marvel and mythic allure, forever submerged in the depths of the Caspian Sea.
